Here is the story according to the widow:
The husband, an airplane pilot, purchased the car from the original owner around 1987 (the earliest service invoice that we have for the car) with possibly 30,000 miles on it. He spent the next few years showing it off to his friends. He maintained it well and a hand-written note card shows oil changes / servicing done at approximately 3000 mile intervals. He replaced two tires in 1989.
The widow says his health began to fail and he was driving it less and less – she says he claimed “he didn’t like the way the exhaust sounded” but more likely he began to find the car too much to handle.
(Around 1994 he purchased a Ford Ranger pickup that would be his darling and daily driver for the next 20 years)
He parked this classic in his airplane hangar and AZDOT records show a De-Insured Certification “In Storage” as of 1/1/1995. The last tags on the old plates were 1997.
The car has remained in the hangar, untouched, until now when the widow asked that it be given a new owner.
We brought the car out of storage and washed off years of dust.
The original white paint is in excellent condition but would benefit from a professional detailing to fully restore its shine.
The blackout paint under the headlights is fading and should be renewed.
The bodywork looks perfect with no dents, dings, or significant scratches or flaws.
The ‘Z-28’ badge behind the right front wheel well has fallen off (glue failure) – otherwise all badging and trims are intact.
The interior is likewise excellent. It has been vacuumed and dusted but no further detailing has been done.
The dash is protected by a cover and has no cracks.
The seats are immaculate with no tears, stains, or sagging: Factory Option 62C ‘FCC2 Saddle Custom Cloth BKT’.
The carpeting is also immaculate, always covered by OEM floor carpet mats (Factory Option B34 and B35).
The steering wheel leather (Factory Option N33 Comfortilt Steering Wheel) shows very light use.
There is a small area of fogging in the left side of the tachometer lens.
The car is additionally fitted with Factory Options AU3 Power Door Locks, A01 Tinted Glass, A31 Power Windows, A90 Power Hatch Release, CD4 Intermittent Wipers, C49 Back Window Defogger, K34 Cruise Control, and YE2 – the ‘top-of-the-line’ AM/FM/Cassette Stereo System.
The original removeable radio antenna is included with the car.
Tires are the original Goodyear “Gatorback” Eagle directional high performance radials with the DOT tire dates of 276 on the rear (shows manufacture date as 27th week of 1986) and 298 on the front (29th week of 1988). At 38 and 36 years old respectively these tires are unsuitable for any serious road use – but I have counselled the widow against replacing them since the new owner will most certainly have their own preference in appropriate tires. Surprisingly, the tires look good though the rear tires are worn to approximately 30 to 40 percent tread remaining.
The Factory Aluminum Wheels look to be perfect.
The original Factory “Space-Saver” spare tire is unused in its storage bin with its original inflation canister and tire change tools also intact and unused.
The driveline, with a 5.0 Liter Tuned Port Injection V8 (Factory Option LB9) and Automatic Transmission With Overdrive (Factory Option MX0) is unmodified and starts, runs, and drives well.
The engine compartment is almost showroom clean.
The Insulating Hood Pad is mostly intact but could be replaced if desired for cosmetic perfection.
Since coming out of storage it has been driven cautiously at speeds not exceeding 35 mph on local roads because of the age of the tires but it runs and drives just like I remember the Muscle Cars of the 1980s.
This is a “Drivers Car” and will demand your full attention, repaying you with the sheer fun and excitement of driving a high-performance 1980s “IROC Factory Race Car”!
Work done since re-commissioning:
* Fuel tank removed and cleaned, Fuel Pump, fuel strainer and fuel filter replaced, fuel system checked.
* New battery installed.
* New Hood Support Cylinders installed.
* New Rear Hatchback Lid Support Cylinders installed.
* Washed and Interior Vacuumed and Dusted.
During the removal of the fuel tank the undercarriage was inspected and found to look like new. There is no rust and even the exhaust system is un-rusted. This has obviously been an Arizona car for all its life!
Work to be done by new owner:
* Replacement Tires of the new owners choice.
* Original R12 Air Conditioning System needs either recharging with R12 or conversion to 134A – new owners choice (for originality, or for convenience – your choice).
* New Spark Plug wires of new owners choice: The car starts and runs but one wire has been damaged by a rodent and the core is exposed.
* Given that the car has been waiting for you at least 29 years it will want a tune-up and all fluids replaced – this is your opportunity to bond with your new acquisition.
* Detailing and cosmetic improvement as desired on this already clean and straight classic.

These cars are selling from $25,000 and up depending on the level of restoration and originality and values have been steadily increasing.
Just for fun, the car includes a 1980’s era Radar Detector for your amusement!
